Cancun Spring Break

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

Nearly 100,000 American teenagers and young adults travel to Cancun for the Cancun spring break every year. This is a huge destination for college-aged spring breakers, and this package begins around February 19 to end around March 26. So if you are in the mood to relax in Cancun, you will either have to book a more expensive hotel, or completely avoid this season. This is because in these 6 weeks, there is an enormous influx of party-going college kids flooding the beaches, clubs and bars to have as much fun as possible.

Cancun is an ideal locale for students looking to unwind from the long winter semester. As long as there is sun, sand and a drinking age of 18, Cancun spring break is considered a hot spot. There are tons of travel agencies and websites that offer cheap tickets and party packages to Cancun. Sometimes, a roundtrip, five-night hotel stay, with two meals per day and a party pass to all nightclubs, costs as little as a thousand dollars. This is the reason most of the students save money the whole year for spring break, so that they can really enjoy themselves in Cancun. Coming to Cancun, they enjoy drinking, lazing on the beach, snorkeling, diving, dancing and eating.

Although the Cancun spring break usually goes about without an incident, sometimes these students may be caught off-guard by the unfamiliar surroundings and local practices. They just have to remember to be careful with the money they take along on the spring break, and maybe hand over the money to the hotel safe to prevent from any thefts. As the Cancun spring break is a time for drinking, there should be some control here, as most of the crimes that take place are committed under the influence of alcohol, and in the discotheque environment. Just keep these points in mind to have an enjoyable Cancun spring break.

26 Lanzarote Attractions – Guinate Tropical Park

Friday, January 16th, 2009

The Parque Tropical is open every day of the year including bank holidays from 10:00 to 17:00 hours. Admission is 14 Euros per adult and 5 Euros per child and I’d recommend allowing a half day to go around the Park, although some visitors have been know to spend the whole day there.

Parque Tropical is located in the north of the the island at the foot of Mount Corona, an extinct volcano which is the highest point of the island, close to the Famara Cliffs and 400 meters above sea level, with spectacular views to the islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza and Montaa Clara.

We arrived via the most scenic route which took us through Teguise, the old capital of Lanzarote, up through Los Valles to some stunning views of the island and down into the beautiful province of Haria (the valley of a thousand palms). From Haria we took the road past the Mirador del Rio (Article 22 of mine covers a separate day trip there). You will see the signs for Guinate and the Park from this point in the journey.

The park covers 11 acres of land (45,000 square feet) and includes gardens, waterfalls and lakes. The park has many species of bird (around 300 species in total), including Ostriches, Flamingos, Cranes, Hornbills, Toucans, Cockatoos, Macaws, Pheasants, Ibis, Ducks, Pigeons & Doves. There are also many species of the smaller birds like Finches, Cardinals and Love Birds. There is also a large walk-through aviary, some 3/4 of an acre (about 3200 sq. meters) with six species of Weaver Birds that breed naturally in the area. It is quite fascinating to watch them building their hanging nests within the aviary.

In the same area you’ll find Parrots and many other small birds that fly free in a this almost natural habitat. Within this aviary there is a lake of some 70metres by 7metres full of Koi Carp, some measuring a length of nearly a meter. You will also see Mandarin and Carolina Ducks swimming around between the fountains. A fascinating area of the park which must not be missed.

The Parque is known to have a successful breeding program of macaws, cockatoos, african greys and other species of parrots. Also with various doves, finches, pheasants, ornamental ducks, ostriches, rheas, trumpeter hornbills and many other small birds.

In the gardens you’ll find many different varieties of plants, shrubs and trees in the park, many of which have been labelled with interesting information about their particular uses and countries of origin. There is a cactus walk on the hillside with a large variety of cacti and where a waterfall drops down into the flamingo, duck and swan pool below.

Every day, there are six bird, at no extra charge. These take place at 11.30, 12.30, 13.30, 14.30, 15.30, and 16.30 where macaws and cockatoos can be seen riding their bicycles on the high wire, driving cars and scooters, adding and taking away numbers and many other tricks. The theatre where the show is performed seats 200 people and hot and cold snacks can be served to you as you watch the show or you can relax on the bar terrace which overlooks a large area of the park. There is a children’s play area here where the children can let off a bit of steam whilst the parents enjoy a quiet drink.

There is a well stocked shop in the Park, many items of which are exclusive to the Park and will not be found in any other shop on the island. There are two toilet areas in the park. The first is situated near the entrance and exit and has baby change facilities in the ladies. The other is near the bar and show theatre. There are ramps for wheelchairs, around the park and into the theatre. No dogs are allowed in the park.

Malaga-A Quick Guide to The Costa Del Sol’s Capital

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Malaga is the major coastal city of Andalucia, and in many respects is unchanged over time making it a good example of an authentic Andaluz city. With a population of over half a million, it is a thriving town with a great deal to offer the visitor. The currency in operation in Malaga, as in many European countries in the Euro.

Malaga is an old Moorish territory and many interesting historical remains can still be found from that era. La Alcazaba is a fortress dating back almost a century and has now been turned into an architectural museum. Nearby is Castillo de Gibralfaro, a magnificent Moorish structure of the fourteenth century which was the site of a long battle between the citizens of Malaga and the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand & Isobella.

The pleasant climate in Malaga makes it a great place for outdoor activities. Between April & September temperatures usually range from 13 – 27 celsius. Even during the winter months, it rarely drops below 10 degrees centigrade. Many of the amenities in the centre of the city close for siesta in the early afternoon, so this is the perfect time to enjoy a walk in the sunshine surrounded by the beautiful flowering trees in the City Park.

The renowned artist Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga and there is a museum in his honour which is housed in the Palacio de Buenavista in the heart of the city.

The local people, known as Malaguenos, love their food and the city is a great place in which to eat out. The bars and restaurants are where much of the social life of the city takes place. Prices are reasonable, and a good way to get a feel for the local fare is to visit one of the tapas bars where the visitor can try small portions of many local dishes.

For those who love to shop, the main shopping street is Calle Marques de Larios where there are a host of exclusive and expensive boutiques and shops. After a hard days shopping why not relax for a while, enjoy a meal and then go out on the town in one of the many music bars and clubs in the city. Nightlife in Malaga does not really get going till late with many venues not opening their doors before 2300hrs and staying open through the night, so visitors would be wise to adopt the local tradition of a siesta during the afternoon to recharge the batteries for a late night out!

Malaga is a vibrant city with a lot to see and do and a beautiful climate in which to do it – check it out!

A Senior’s Travel Tips for Seniors

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Whether traveling alone, in a group or on a tour, there are some things I suggest that Seniors should do to ease their way across Europe, or pretty much wherever they may be going. Based on experience they can help you have a much more enjoyable trip.

Forget the suitcases. Bring a backpack, preferably a 9″ x 22″ x 14″ with wheels so you can pull it along behind you when you tire of packing it on your back. Be sure to include a short bungee cord so you can attach a smaller bag on top. Pack light, you will have an extra spring in your step if you do. Two tops, a pair of good lightweight pants (depending on the time of year), good walking shoes that are well broken in, a couple of changes of underwear and socks and that should be all you need in your pack.

Consider traveling in the shoulder seasons (April, May, September and October) when Europe is not so busy. The most fatiguing aspects of European travel are the crowds and for most North Americans, the heat. Easter Weekend for example is an excellent time to visit Holland; the Keukenhoff Gardens are in full bloom, a sight not to be missed. In the fall there are more harvest festivals than you could ever hope to get to. You’ll find the locals generally have more time to spend with you on the off season. Whenever you go to Europe, be sure to get to meet the locals, they are what you will remember for years to come, not some dusty museum.

If you are flying direct, and taking a suitcase of any size, consider checking your bag in with the airline because it can become a real drag towing it along all over the airport. If you are a little slow walking, ask the airline or flight attendant to arrange transport to make sure you get your flight.

When arranging accommodation in advance and stairs are a problem, be sure to ask for a ground floor room. And you might give this some consideration: different areas and different types of accommodation offer varying advantages and disadvantages. If you have a heavy suitcase, or tire easily, book a hotel near the train station. If you stay outside the city where there’s good connections downtown for day trips, you’ll usually find it much cheaper, it will be quieter, bigger rooms, and with fewer stairs. If you are up to it, try staying at hostels, every city tourist center will have a list of them. If I’m on a trip longer than two weeks, I will definitely find a nice spot and just laze around for two to four days and get rested up.

Don’t forget to ask for Seniors’ discounts everywhere possible. This is particularly true at any kind of museum, some concert halls, railways, airlines, bus lines, ferry and shipping lines. If you’ve got gray or white hair – flaunt it! It may save you a bundle on a two or three week trip. Most places have a discount policy in place, but YOU HAVE TO ASK. By the way, don’t be put off by the term they use in the UK. They call it a “concession”, but like a rose, it’s just as sweet by any name and they are actually quite generous with it in the UK. Some few places will even let you in free and you can’t beat a hundred percent reduction, call it what you will.

Get a micro-cassette recorder and use it to make brief notes on what you see and experience. Later you can transfer the notes to your journal for your grandkids to read, assuming you’ve been behaving on your trip! If you want to bring a camera, make sure you know how to use it properly, well before leaving. Buying it at the airport prior to departure doesn’t work. You’ll spend more time trying to get it to work than you will enjoying the scenery. Ask anyone who has traveled a lot; they have all seen this happen time and again. Spend all that money to tour Spain or wherever, and then spend half your trip battling with your camera, or video recorder.

These have been just a few tips that really only make common sense, but you may not have thought of them, and if they help you enjoy your trip a little more, then this article has been worthwhile.

Planning the Kilimanjaro Climb

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Kilimanjaro starts on the dusty hot plains around Moshi town and then moves to the lush villages on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. From here you ascend through tropical rainforest, alpine desert to near artic conditions at the summit. Many people fail because they are ill equipped and sometimes people die in attempting the climb.

Be properly equipped it is an essential part of your preparation to ensure that you are well equipped for the attempt on Kilimanjaro. Draw up a check list or print one of the many websites of Kilimanjaro specialist.

To be physically prepared is important. You will be hiking to the top, it is a demanding climb and make sure your body is adequately prepared for the physical challenges that lay ahead. In the months and weeks before your departure for Tanzania take part in a training program to ensure your body is in shape for your Kilimanjaro expedition.

Mental preparation is also important you should always remain in a positive state of mind, but not overly confident. Your mental stamina will without a doubt, make the difference on the last day when you climb toward the summit. Try to look ahead at what may happen, situations you may encounter on the mountain and try to work out the most suitable course of action, either by yourself and then as a group.

Adequate travel insurance is important, be certain that your travel and medical insurance, will also provide you with cover for the climb up Kilimanjaro.

Your guides will instruct you on the best way to reach the top of Kilimanjaro, it is in there interest that you reach the top so listen to them – They Know Best. When climbing you will be repeatedly told ‘pole pole’ which is go slowly in Swahili; besides the first day or two the scenery is lovely so take it slowly and enjoy the surroundings. Many times people want to take the climb quickly and attitude sickness stops them short of reaching their goal – the highest point in Africa.

You will be also told to drink water – make sure you drink at least four liters of liquid per day – preferably water. Water on the mountain is safe to drink from the second day onwards, but care should always be taken. Remember a stomach upset can dehydrate and this will make the climb all the more difficult, if not dangerous.

Climb as lightly as possible, this becomes even more important on your summit night – extra weight will slow you down and will also make breathing more difficult. Clothing lists are available from most Websites.

A ski – pole is essential as it reduces external and internal loads on the knee joints using 1 ski pole is a must, but 2 poles are recommended. These can be rented in Tanzania. Replace your head lamp and camera batteries with new ones on your summit night. Do a little research and be a good scout and be prepared and most of all enjoy the climb.

Miami’s Most Romantic Date Locations

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Most of my columns deal with things to do as a completely unattached swinging single: going to bars and clubs with friends, dancing, hitting on attractive members of the opposite sex, feats of strength, and the like. This column will deal with an entirely different sort of activity: going on dates. Most of the locations and venues I talk about will be acceptable for any couple – be it a first date or a 25th anniversary (though for some venues, like the House of Irritating Relatives, might be better left to couples who are secure in their relationship). Miami is a great city for all kinds of nightlife – and has many fantastic venues for dates, ranging from the incredibly informal to the ultra-austere. Let’s start with dinner, shall we?

The Palme d’Or is more than just a semi-prestigious film award – it is also a fantastic, upscale French restaurant in Coral Gables. It’s expensive and classy (wear a jacket), and the food is really fantastic. This might be a little much for a first date (unless rich and curiously magnanimous is what you are going for…maybe it is good for a first date…), but it is a great location for important anniversaries and events. All of your French food favorites are available here in fine form. The duck fois gras with truffle is unbelievably good, if you like that kind of thing. The atmosphere is warm and romantic, and you’ll probably only have to sell a minor organ to pay the bill.

For a more casual (but still quality) dining experience, try Doraku – a nice sushi place on Miami Beach. The sushi is incredibly fresh (the ocean being all around, and all), and the service is always very good. This is my favorite first date spot in Miami – it’s quite nice, the food is delicious, and the prices are reasonable but not cheap (plus I just really like sushi). The staff is always personable, and the décour adequately (but not stiflingly) romantic. Doraku is a great all around restaurant, for dates or otherwise.

Naturally, there is far more to do in Miami on a date than just dinner. You could see a show, or a symphony concert – both great choices. However, if you wanted to do that, you’d be getting tickets instead of reading this hackish article. From that, I can surmise that you are looking for slightly less cliché destinations, and I am here to help.

First up, a spot that is a favorite with locals and tourists alike: the Bayside Marketplace.
It’s a handsome collection of shops, bars, restaurants, and other entertaining venues by the waterfront that is open until 11:00pm on weekends. There’s certainly something for everyone here, from drinks and live music to shopping and quaint open-air walkways. It is also a very romantic place to watch boats come in and out of Marina, and is a nice place to go for a date when you don’t have anything in particular in mind.

The next place I am recommending will always be a bit of a gamble. It will be either a rollicking good time for you both, or a largely unpleasant event for everyone involved. I am, of course, talking about an evening at the Miami Improv Comedy Club. This club is a Coconut Grove staple that dates to the mid 1960s, and sports both newcomers and the old guard of the comedy world. Just make sure you pick the night you go carefully; it will mean the difference between a night of fun and entertainment watching someone like Steven Wright and a night of being told repeatedly (and increasingly belligerently) to “get ready to LAFF” by an overweight prop comic. Even with this warning, the Improv is still one of my favorites. If it’s bad you can make the jokes.

The last location I have for you is admittedly a bit cliché, but I feel I would be in err to neglect it. Being as you are in Miami – home to some of the most famous beaches in the world – you might consider taking a walk on the beach. The lights of the city on the water at night, combined with the boats going in and out, can make for a memorable experience. Again, may not be the be first date location (“I’D LOVE TO GET YOU ALONE ON A DESERTED BEACH AFTER HAVING A FEW DRINKS”), but depending on how the evening goes, who knows? One thing is sure – there have been many a waning relationship that has gotten re-sparked by a romantic walk on the beach. Statistics say that. And everyone knows there is nothing more romantic than statistics.

Hopefully that gets you started on date locations in Miami. I’ve really only scratched the surface of great date spots, and leave you to discover your own. Be creative and thoughtful, and you’re sure not to spend the rest of your life alone. Happy travels.

Nick Jurkowski is the senior editor for Millenium Limo where he educates the public about the limousine services they offer, as well as the bounty of Miami’s nightlife.

Legions of gamers may have heard of the term “offshore sports betting”, though a few aren’t wholly savvy what that suggests. Which Season is best for Travel Bargains?

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

When it comes to budget traveling, it is hard to overestimate the importance of the season of travel. Travel costs are largely dependent on the time of the year, and every travel destination has its high, low and shoulder seasons. Knowing the seasons for the destination of your choice is a great way to enjoy wonderful travel on a budget. Work with a travel agent to find the best discounts available for the destination and season you desire or look up travel discounts on the Internet. You can find many good deals.

Remember that the high season for a particular destination varies quite a bit from location to location. For some locations, the high season can be as short as a couple of weekends throughout the year, while for other locations high season can last all summer (or all winter) long. Some traveling such as an Alaskan Cruise is best starting in mid-May and ending in mid-September. Of course, a Hawaii cruise is good all year long.

It is also important to know, however, when low season is low for a reason. There are certain locations you definitely do not want to visit in the off season. For instance, in August, most locations in Egypt approach the temperature of an oven, while hurricane season in Florida or the Caribbean can definitely put a crimp in your vacation. In addition, many beach towns, and some parts of Europe, just about close down in the off season. It is important, therefore to plan smart to get the best travel bargains while still enjoying your vacation. Usually a good and an inexpensive travel item is a cruise and you can find a cheap cruise for any season. You can travel to different destinations on one cruise alone.

The best choice for budget minded travelers is often the shoulder season, that magical time of year when bargains are plentiful but destinations are still very enjoyable. The period between high season and low, known as the shoulder season in the travel industry, is the time when prices have begun to drop, but for reasons that are related to the demand for the destination, not on its underlying value or lack of value. Many people do not usually travel during this time which means less demand which means cheap prices.

For many locations, the shoulder season begins in the fall, when the college students and vacationing families that kept demand high begin to go home. For instance, fall is a great time to visit many European locations. The temperatures are cooler, the crowds are gone, and the prices on lodgings and meals are lower.

In the Caribbean and Mexico, the shoulder season covers the late spring season. Prices drop at this time since most tourists from colder climates are enjoying better weather at home and no longer dreaming of escaping to a warmer climate.

Most guidebooks and travel related web sites will have information on the best time to go to each location for maximum value, so if you are unsure exactly when the high, low and shoulder seasons occur for your destination be sure to check one of these sources for further information.

Finding great deals is possible in all seasons, of course, but it is generally most difficult in the summer time, when interest in vacationing reaches its peak. Most people are planning and taking their vacations during summer season since school is out for most children. The winter is an excellent season to visit many locations, but remember that it is high season for destinations like ski resorts. So the mountain areas (ski resorts) in Europe and United States will be in high demand and the costs will be higher for the skier.

The winter season can be a magical one for many locations that are on sale, however. For instance, travel to Asia is often markedly cheaper in the winter, but the sight of a snow covered Shinto temple is a remarkable sight, and one not to be missed. Many locations in Asia and Europe have winters that are less harsh than those in many parts of the United States, so a winter vacation can still be quite magical. Winter season can also bring about discounts for Disney World in Florida as long as you stay away from the holiday season. Mid-January to early March might get you the discounts you need.
