Slowplaying Hazards

One of the more common slowplay methods you see with people in medium sized cash ring games in online poker is to limp in very early position when dealt a big pair like AA or KK. Being first to act and coming in raising with those hands is often a prediction players will make (given the idea that in order to come in from early position, you need a really big hand). To counteract this, then, many players will just limp and then pray that someone after them raise so that they can then reraise or other, and their opponents won’t be as likely to expect them having the big pair.

One of the kinks, though, in this procedure, is that when no one raises, and you go to the flop with the blinds and other limpers still intact. Then, even when a ream of what seems like blanks come down, if you see any kind of big action, it is hard to know whether your opponents are pushing top pair thinking they must be good, or if they’ve flopped a hand that beats your poker pair. The mistake, then, that you see many of these limpers make, is that they intend to push the aces hard no matter what comes and kind of close their eyes and pray that no one has actually caught up.

The key, then, if you are going to make this kind of move, especially in deep stack poker, is to be able to give up those aces when it becomes apparent your slowplay has backfiredotherwise you are stepping into a world where you don’t know exactly the outcome, and are truly gambling.
