ATS Euromaster to Pay £7,500 after Lapses Found in its Fire Safety System

On 14th December 2009, District Judge Callaway of Southampton Magistrates’ Court held ATS Euromaster of Southampton guilty of violation of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and imposed on it a heavy fine of £7,500. The prosecution was a result of an enquiry conducted by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Services Fire Safety Officers.

During the enquiry, it was discovered that the Southampton property lacked adequate fire safety measures. Main violations that were found were lack of proper training of the property manager in fire safety, lack of sufficient modes of warning the people regarding a fire, lack of sufficient light on an escape route built to take people out in case of fire, and obstruction in reaching one of the fire exits. The court imposed separate fines for each of these violations.

In addition to that, the company was directed to pay an additional fine of £1,000 for its failure to conduct proper risk assessment of the property. The company pleaded guilty to all the charges.

While the company claimed that it was a one-time mistake and was corrected as soon as it was discovered, Assistant Chief Officer Steve Hamm, Head of Community Safety for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, indicated that many property owners pay negligible attention to fire safety.

Hamm hopes that this case will be a suitable reminder to all those people who have not made proper arrangements to prevent fire and to help people in escaping in case a fire breaks out. A huge fine may convince property owners that they too will suffer due to the lack of safety measures.

The NEBOSH Fire Certificate has been designed for managers, supervisors, and employee representatives who are responsible for fire risk management within their organisation. NEBOSH Fire Safety will help organisations meet their legal duties under fire safety and general health and safety law, and to protect their people and their business reputation.
