First off, I am a designer. Now you’re thinking, here’s this guy trying to convince me to hire a designer costing a few hundred to a few thousand dollars instead of buying a pre-made web template for about $60. Well, these days most companies don’t have the money to invest in a costly web site and there are thousands of hungry web designers out there, plus now there are web template resources. These resources can equal great value and effectiveness for the customer as well as increased business for the web designer.

For the customer it is important to be prepared. They need to know what their website should look like, how it will perform, the ability to update and add to it easily, so as not to be held hostage by a design firm’s technical code talk.

Now for the reality of web templates. There are hundreds of web templates and many web sites offering the same hundreds of templates. There are templates for a wide range of business types: from agriculture to wedding sites. Depending on the business category you may find 20 to 400 hundred different template packages to choose from. Most look quite good, but remember you may not be the only company that buys the template. There could be sites that look the same as yours unless you buy an exclusive on the design. The price for an exclusive design ranges from $800 to $3000, meaning you must be the first customer to purchase the template to be used only by you. On the other hand, prior to your purchase of a particular template, several customers may have bought that same template and can use it as well, and as a result will have made this template non-exclusive.

Ok, here is where I come in, as well as my fellow designers. The times for web site design are changing as competition grows daily, not just from low-cost template designs but from low-cost designers (will talk about that in more detail in another article). I am not going to list any particular template design company as there are only a few choice ones. Templates are an excellent resource to offer your customers as you are showing your willingness to work with them for reasonable costs. You can fine tune the design, whether it be graphic changes as well as text. As a rule, many companies do not have the software to perform modifications to the web site template or they have the software but not the time or expertise. The template is a good starting point and can save costs, but modifications are usually needed as one size does not fit all. This way the customer gets good value and you get new business.

It can be considered a fun and unique thing in a logo but the result does not always reflect what the company is and its products. Multiple logos. These are logos comprising of more than one illustration or texts. This can result in confusion as customers will have to remember many things about your logo that in the end nothing will surely makes sense. These are just some of the no no’s in creating a logo. What should be kept in mind in logo making is that the concept should be conveyed just by looking at it. And it should be memorable enough for the people not to forget it as days and even years go by.

The time it takes to load your site can make or break a visitor’s first impression of your site. If your site takes too long to load, the visitor will click “Stop” or “Back” and leave your web site. If you are a business and offering people important information, it is critical to have a nice design, with a quick load time.

You may want to check out the load time of your page, to indeed see if your site loads quick enough for the average user. Sounds & Videos should be avoided on your main page, as they take up most time to load. Keep these for inner pages if possible. Videos and sound files can be from 100 KB to 1 MB in size or larger. If the user needs to load a 500 KB video file on a 56 K modem, it will take upwards to 89 seconds to complete. This definitely could turn the user away from your site. So keep these files to a fairly small size, or avoid if possible.

Text can also play a significant role in the load time. If you have a large amount of HTML code and large amount of content on your main page, it will also increase the load time. Text however is not as significant, as the entire text you have on the site may not be even the same size as a couple of pictures combined.

So limit the large sized graphics on your web sites. Your visitors will appreciate the fast loading site with the information being presented that they are looking for!

The Top Ten Checklist For Low Web Site Sales

You have good traffic, but low client sign ups and other sales. Web sites are only as good as their copy. If your Web sales are down, check your copywriting.


Next time you think Web site–either putting up a new one, or wanting to improve yours for more contacts and sales–use this checklist:


1. Replace long paragraphs of copy with short benefit-driven headlines.


Incorporate sound bites or questions your visitor will feel compelled to respond to such as “Follow up or Foul Up?”


2. Make your copy beneath the headlines short and snappy.


Your potential clients come for easy-to-read material. Like you, they are in a hurry, and want free information fast.


3. Put yourself in your targeted visitors’ shoes.


Think, “why are they at my site?” They want two things: 1) free content such as articles or tips about your service or product and 2) how you can solve their problem or challenge–the top benefits you offer.


4. Give your web visitors a lot of free information.


That’s why they come to your site. After visiting you 5-10 times, they are more likely to buy from you. Place a command like “Please book mark this site. We put up new information each two weeks.” Add a new link called “free articles.”


5. Aim your copy at your targeted market.


The biggest mistake we make is not defining our target audience before we write Web copy. When we use shotgun promotion aimed at many groups, we don’t get well known as the savvy expert in our field, and lose visitor’s attention and loyalty.


Choose one audience first and aim your copy at them. You can later add special links for other audiences.


6. Give your visitors a variety of articles, such as an interview or you solving a client’s problem, to post in your “free articles” link.


Put a new one up every 2-3 weeks. Put “NEW!” beside each new article to draw attention to it.


7. Categorize the types of articles you post on your site.


Think about “under 500 words,” “how-to tips,” or “top ten lists.” Help your visitors get to the articles they want and need. Offer your articles by autoresponders too.


8. Present your copy to inform, convince, and compel your visitor to click and buy.


For your coaching services, place links such as “Why Choose your name?” or “On Book Coaching.” or “Coaching Packages.” Include proper headlines on your home page.


9. Keep your language simple.


Even if your audience is a rocket scientist, keep your copy at 10th grade level or lower. Online visitors want short sentences, short paragraphs no more than 4-5 lines. When visitors see a long paragraph, it may look too hard to read and digest. They just click away. Remember they want their information easy and fast.


10. Write a list of 5-10 benefits of your service.


Transfer this into your coaching sales piece on your Web site. You’ll need to include coaching outcomes, their needs, the value they receive, and the main area of focuses you can give them.


Stop long descriptions of you and your mission. Focus more on your Web visitor who came to learn about how she can benefit from your service. Make your reader say, “This is amazing. I want this!”

Valentine’s Day is a day when probably the largest quantity of cards are sent online. In this competitive age, how to design cards that attract users to your website? Only the text Happy Valentine’s Day runs across in the center vertically. Then next text appears in this sequence – My Darling, My Sweetheart, My Love, I wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day. Web usability is about making the web more usable for people who go online. It is about making websites easier to navigate which in turn help people find what they need faster. As we know, people like you and I go online to look for information, to learn more about a specific product or service before we commit ourselves to buying a product or a service.

When websites are not designed to be usable, then I cannot find the information I want. In short, this frustrates me and I leave and the business loses a potential customer.

Regardless of whether you are selling a service or a product, making your website usable is one of the key elements in ensuring you have a steady stream of satisfied prospects and customers, who come back again and again and hence, producing for you a sustainable and profitable business.

What makes a website usable?

A website consists of a number of web pages. These web pages contain graphics, text, colours and logo. How these elements are arranged is the difference between making a sale or making your customer frustrated.

Web usability focuses on the customer. At every step of the way, your website must be designed with the customer in mind.

The problem is, many websites do not do this. If you link to other pages within your website or link out to other websites, ensure your link opens up in the same window. Most users usually use their Back button to get back to the original web page. If your link opens up in a new window, users would not know and would not be able to use their Back button at all.

Be simple and direct

There’s no prize for being clever online so name your navigational links in easy, simple and clear language. Users don’t like to guess what’s behind a link like “Knowledge Repository” but they do know what “Free Articles” are. Language must be simple and direct so that everyone, regardless of their educational level, can understand when they arrive at your website.

Scannable information

Users do not like reading online because it is 25% slower than conventional print reading according to http://www.useit.com. Users prefer to scan websites for vital information. So if you want to help them scan faster, chunk your information into bulleted lists. Keep one idea per paragraph and keep paragraphs short. Use bold text or headlines to highlight important information. Align your text to the left because this helps users read faster.

Fast downloads

Websites must download fast or you lose the visitor. You have less than 10 seconds to capture your visitor’s attention. To ensure your website downloads fast, design with the assumption that every web visitor is using an old computer, accessing your website using dial-up Internet services.
